The Southern Cross University Bachelor of Business graduate has put his studies into practice by setting up his own company offering hire and tours with the striking new Spyder Ryder Roadster motorbike.
With two wheels at the front and one at the back, the Canadian-made Spyder has only been in production for two years, and has already been featured in films such as Transformers 2, GI Joe and in an episode of CSI Miami.
Todd said it was at an exhibition at the Gold Coast Convention Centre that first gave him the idea to bring Spyder Ryder to the Gold Coast.
“I had heard about the Spyder before, but I first saw it in the flesh at an exhibition at the Gold Coast Convention Centre,” said Todd.
“I’d recently been to Byron Bay and had been surprised at the popularity of experienced based tourism, things like kayak hire – so the two things together got me thinking.
"I did some research and found that there was no one in the world offering tours on these vehicles, so I decided to be the first.”
It took him 12 months to complete the business planning process and buy his very own Spyder's, which he now uses to take visitors on a range of tours from the Springbrook rainforest to the hustle and bustle of Surfers Paradise.
Todd, who first worked in business lending with ANZ bank after completing his studies before going on to work for his parents business', design and sale of industrial sheds and importing car hoists from China, said he felt well prepared for setting up his own company.
“I studied a Bachelor of Business with Finance and International Business majors, this has given me a broad knowledge and a solid base to work from for starting a new business,” said Todd.
“I’ve been able to combine the business theory I learned at university with my corporate experience from ANZ, my knowledge gained from my parents’ small business', and of course with my passion for bikes.
“On these tours you really get to experience the place in a way that you wouldn’t in a tour bus – for example, in the rainforest you can smell the smells and hear the noises around you.
“It’s been a great success, and in the future I’m looking forward to expanding the business to other tourism destinations like Cairns, Darwin and Broome.”
